Video Art and Participatory Performance Art
Through the mediums of video art and participatory performance, Laila seeks to break the silence surrounding Female Genital Cutting/Manipulation (FGC/M) within Singapore’s Malay community. By symbolically performing actions such as the preparation of coconut milk, Laila metaphorically deconstructs transgenerational Malay traditions. At the heart of her work lies Pulut Kuning, a dish integral to traditional circumcision ceremonies, frequently masking the problematic aspects of the practice. Through her participatory performance, she invites engagement and dialogue using Pulut Kuning, shedding light on a sensitive issue often shrouded in silence.
