Laila's practice investigates the ways cultural traditions shape, regulate and inform the lives of Malay/Muslim women. Her work centres on socio-political issues within and surrounding the community, examining how inherited beliefs and practices can persist across generations.

 

Drawing from the historical roots of these ideologies, she uses her body and film as primary mediums to question the relationship between tradition, identity and the self. Through rituals, organic materials and storytelling, her practice considers how heritage can be critically engaged with, while navigating the tension between cultural preservation and necessary change.
