Artwork Statement:
“Women of: Waterloo” is a participatory body of work that reclaims public space to honour and amplify the voices of women on Waterloo Street. This tea party, accompanied by projections of community members, reflects shared moments of laughter and storytelling through the feminine acts of braiding and handling textiles.
Through the lens of familiar, everyday acts such as conversation, braiding, and working with textiles—often dismissed as idle “gossip” or “women’s work”—we aim to reclaim and reframe these interactions as meaningful exchanges of wisdom, empowerment, and connection.
Ultimately, Women of: Waterloo serves as an homage to the women of this community—a celebration of their stories, rituals, and relationships—and a call to revalue the intimate, powerful connections women foster when they come together. Through this work, we aspire to create space for authentic, intergenerational dialogue where women’s experiences are centred, honoured, and celebrated.
Special thanks to Janice, the ladies of CityStyle Beauty Salon, Bee Yen, the lovely residents of St. Vincent Home and everyone who participated in the creation of this work.
